The Bignic picnic in the Park
Bignic'23/08/09.
by Jon Price
The 'Bignic' took place on Hazelwell Park on Sun 23/08/09 from 1:00 through 'til 4:00.This was a new venture instigated initially by Pastor Gary Cadge of Stirchley Community Church and was supported by the 'Friends of Hazelwell Park' group.
We were certainly hoping for good weather and this was the case.Weren't sure how many people to expect and we were very surprised that for the bulk of the time there were at least 80 folks present from all age ranges. The whole event was kept very low key with the intent of folks being able to have an 'old fashion picnic' and to this end I think we achieved this.
A good old game of rounders was started up as boys against girls with a good support from those on the park. The victors in this contest were the ---s.You'll need to fill in the blanks yourself.
As the focus on this event was the local community it was a pleasure to see one of our CPSO's Sally Stor in attendance especially as it was her day off and her wedding anniversary. We were also pleased that some folks from outside of the area made the effort to come along.
Thanks to everyone that came along and hopefully enjoyed themselves and look forward to the 'Bignic '10' JP

A paramedic in a rapid response car, an incident support officer and an

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “Crews arrived to find a

Did you know that the city of Birmingham has an Emergency Resilience Team? Members work with communities and neighbourhoods to discuss and advise on how to cope with emergency situations such as flood, tornado, fire or ....! The team is currently in the process of making a DVD which will become available to the public in due course.
Approximately 25 local residents including children were invited to take part in a film shoot in Ripple Road, Stirchley, on Thursday 2nd April 2009 depicting a mock-up evacuation. Fire Service and Police personnel were also on scene as was the City Council's Emergency Resilience Information van.
Participants enjoyed free refreshments and the knowledge that we were helping other people, as well as ourselves, be more aware of the relevant issues.
Were you affected by the floods in September 08? Flood Action Groups are being set up so that we are all better prepared in the future. Contact your local Neighbourhood Forum for details of how you can help too and access further information.

Exciting opportunity to be a film star!
The Birmingham Resilience Team is producing a DVD to encourage communities and individuals to be better prepared in case of major emergencies. The Birmingham tornado, Lozells disturbances, floods of 2007 and 2008, along with the City Centre evacuation and other terrorist alerts should tell us all that it is sensible to know what to do if we are caught up in any such event. We are looking for volunteers to take part in the DVD.

Snow causes havoc. by Mick Jones, Feb 5th 2009
Parts of Birmingham were brought to a standstill today as the worst snow for years made driving conditions a nightmare.
My journey from Fordhouse lane to Redditch which normaly takes 15 minutes took more than one and a half hours.
Local weather forecasters said up to 10cms of snow had fallen across the West Midlands by 6am and a further 2-5cms was expected throughout the day. PHOTO by Helen Burridge

THE bosses of two Bournville homes caring for people with mental problems claim they may have to shut them because they are owed £50,000 by Birmingham City Council.
Partners running Bournville Court and Mary Vale Sheltered Accommodation, both in Victoria Road, claim the money is owed under the Direct Payment Initiative for the care of a dozen of their 20 patients.
But the council has denied owing the money. It said the business, Birmingham Supported Living, had provided homes and care for the patients before they were assessed by the authority, which had been billed retrospectively. Full story
